Fennovoima has announced that "several studies" will be conducted at Pyhäjoki, its proposed site for a new nuclear power plant, over the coming months.

The studies will give information needed to apply for permits, as well as for the construction and design of the power plant, Fennovoima said.

The new investigations include:

- A baseline study for environmental radiation monitoring. Starting in May, this will be conducted by STUK, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, and repeated annually;
- Mapping of bird fauna from May-July
- Collecting samples of sea bottom fauna from the west side of Hanhikivenniemi in July

Monitoring of the seawater quality, which began in 2012, and weather monitoring is also on going.

Seismic monitoring that was started in 2011, also continues and will do so throughout the whole lifecycle of the nuclear power plant. Fennovoima said that four new monitoring stations will enter into use this summer, and that number will rise to around ten over the next few years.
