Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the Ministry of Economy of Slovakia on 7 June signed a memorandum on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

Slovakia has two nuclear plants that were built with the assistance of the USSR - Bohunice (two VVER-440s) and Mohovce (two VVER-440s). Since 2008, Russia’s Atomstroyexport has been working alongside Czech and Slovak companies in the construction of units 3 and 4 at the Mohovce nuclear plant (to be launched in 2019-2020). Earlier it was also reported that Rosatom was studying the possibility of entering into the construction project for a fifth unit at Bohunice.

On 5 June, Russia and Slovakia agreed on supplies of Russian nuclear fuel to Slovak reactors for 2022-2026 with the possibility of the contract extension to 2030. TVEL Corporation (part of Rosatom) and Slovenské Elektrárne signed an additional to the existing bilateral general contract.

Russian fuel will be supplied to the four operational power units at Bohunice and Mochovce, as well as the two units in the final stage of construction at  Mochovce. Slovak Premier Peter Pellegrini said the contract provides for supplies of nuclear fuel worth €630 million.
