Unit five of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP 5&6) attained its first criticality on 24 November. The project comprises two PHWRs of 220MW each at the Rawatbhata site, where four PHWRs with a total installed capacity of 740MW are already in operation.
There are now 18 civil nuclear power reactors operating in India.
Four 700MW PHWRs, including two at the Rawatbhata site are under construction. The operation of RAPP-5 increases the installed nuclear power capacity to 4330MW. Completion of projects in Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamilnadu will raise this figure to 7280MW, according to the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The country's long-term plans call for a ten-times increase of these figures.
