The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has granted the Pickering A Nuclear station a three-year renewal of its operating licence.
The decision, on 29 June, comes following public hearings on 17 February 2010 in Ottawa, Ontario and on 21 May in Pickering, Ontario. During the public hearings, the Commission received and considered submissions from OPG and 34 intervenors, as well as CNSC staff recommendations.
“We’re pleased that CNSC staff and commission members acknowledged the safe operation of Pickering A over the past five year licence period and have confidence in OPG’s ability to continue that safe operation,” said Glenn Jager, Station vice president.
He noted the three year term reflects the regulator’s intent to harmonize the licence terms for both Pickering A and Pickering B.
Operating licences for both Pickering Nuclear generating stations will expire on 30 June 2013.
