German decommissioning and spent fuel company NUKEM Technologies has set up a new subsidiary to handle design and engineering contracts. This new business will compete for small-scale contracts free of the business infrastructure required for turnkey projects -- lawyers, project managers and administrators -- that will be retained in the NUKEM Technologies business.

The new company will execute studies, safety analyses, and design and manage delivery of components, but it will subcontract manufacturing. For finding new business, NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services is limited to the German-speaking European countries of Germany, Switzerland and Austria; NUKEM Technologies handles the rest of the world.

The new company has taken about 40% (110) of the company's 275 employees, with a large percentage of engineers, and is headed up by the long-employed engineering manager Thomas Seipolt as managing director.

The management team of NUKEM Technologies remains unchanged, and includes Ivan Borisov (chairman), Ulf Kutscher, Jean Maurer and Valeriy Zorya. Since 2009 NUKEM Technologies has been owned by Russian state nuclear company ROSATOM.
