Brazil’s new ten-year energy plan, launched 24 September, has confirmed plans for the start-up of Angra 3 in 2016. However, as expected the policy includes no provision for new build to 2021.
Commercial operation of the 1405 MW Angra 3 pressurized water reactor has also been delayed by seven months from 1 December 2015 to 1 July 2016, Eletronuclear confirmed late September. At the end of August, Angra 3 was 41.3% complete, while planned progress at that date was expected to be almost 60%.
The extension to the construction period is due to a delay in awarding the contract for electromechanical equipment installation, the firm in a statement.
On new build Brazil’s new energy plan confirmed that “expansion of nuclear power generating facilities have been restricted to Angra 3.”
It noted, however, that “following the development of new projects and the deployment of new plants around the world… must continue so that [nuclear energy] might be considered in future.”
While it does not include provisions for any new nuclear capacity the plan proposes and expansion in hydroelectric generating capacity from 84GW to 117GW and a rise in wind power from 1.4 GW to 15.6GW over the period to 2021.
