GE Steam Power has signed a new turbine island maintenance agreement with Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica, the owner/operator of Romania's Cernavoda nuclear plant.

Cernavoda comprises two 650MWe Candu 6 reactors, which started operation in 1996 and 2007 and currently supply almost 20% of Romania's electricity.

The eight-year agreement, valued at $120 million, covers maintenance and services on two steam turbines and generators to help ensure reliable operation of the Cernavoda nuclear plant through 2027.

Work on the turbine islands is due to start later this year when GE will perform planned maintenance on the turbine generator at Cernavoda 2, which has been in service since 2007.

“This agreement is an important milestone for our team as we continue collaborating with power producers like SNN to help deliver clean, reliable power to countries across Europe including Romania,” said Martin Boller, Europe Region General Manager for GE Steam Power.

GE has been working with Cernavoda since 1986 and has been providing all turbine island maintenance services since 2004.
