Nuclear Engineering International magazine is pleased to confirm the full speaker line-up for its virtual conference Nuclear Decommissioning: Plans and Innovations which takes place next week. Register here to attend. View the agenda here.

At a time when an increasing number of nuclear facilities are approaching the end of their operating lives, this virtual event aims to share some of the technical developments, innovations and lessons learned from decontamination, decommissioning and radioactive waste management projects around the globe.

The conference will kick off with a presentation from Doug Kerr, who will be representing the World Nuclear Association’s Decommissioning and Waste Management working group. Doug will share a practical guide to decommissioning nuclear plants and management of generated wastes, including best practice on planning, strategy, and economics.

The agenda will also include insight on decommissioning strategy, plans and schedules from power plant operators in Europe (Vattenfall, ENGIE and Fortum). This will be followed by a panel discussion to share some of the common challenges among these programmes and how they are being mitigated. This session will be moderated by Kristina Gillin, principal consultant in nuclear decommissioning at Vysus Group.

Speakers from Sellafield — Europe’s largest nuclear site — will explain how robots and artificial intelligence are supporting legacy cleanup, and present case studies on the use of air, land and water-based robotics.

There will also be technical presentations, including insight from Ansaldo Nuclear on innovative solutions for phosphoric acid decontamination and exhaust solution recycling and a presentation from NUVIA on rapid in-situ characterisation technologies to support remedial works for radioactively contaminated land.

Finally, Akira Ono, President of Fukushima Daiichi Decontamination and Decommissioning Engineering Company (FDEC), Chief Decommissioning Officer (CDO) at TEPCO will share an update on decommissioning progress at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, including on fuel removal? from spent fuel pools, work towards fuel debris retrieval and contaminated water management.

The virtual conference takes place on 21st September at 13:00 BST and is free to attend for industry delegates, including utility, government and supply chain representatives involved in the nuclear decontamination, decommissioning and radioactive waste management sectors. Prior registration is essential.

We would like to thank our sponsors: Ansaldo Nuclear, NUVIA, and REEF Industries and Shadow Robot for supporting this event.
