The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) said in a statement on 20 June that the Bushehr NPP had been temporarily shut down due to a technical problem. The AEOI noted that it had already notified the Energy Ministry about the shutdown. The power plant will come back on stream in few days after solving the technical problem, the statement added.

The Bushehr facility, constructed by Rosatom, began operating in 2011 and reached its full capacity the following year. In 2014, Russia signed a cooperation contract with Iran to help build the second and third units at Bushehr, which are scheduled for launch in 2024 and 2026.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 21 June that it was aware of the development and was in contact with Iranian officials. "We are aware of the announcement of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran that the Bushehr nuclear power plant has been temporarily shut down due to a technical defect and has been disconnected from the national electricity grid," IAEA noted.

A spokesman for the electricity industry, Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi" in an interview with IRNA that efforts to fix the defect had started and that the plant may come back on line within four days. He noted that the plant's outage would lead to a shortfall in electricity supply, which should be compensated for by more serious consumption management programmes.

Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Company, Tavanir, issued a statement asking the people to save electricity consumption, "Due to the forecast of rising temperatures in most parts of the country and its continuation until the end of this week, as well as restrictions in the production sector due to repairs at the Bushehr power plant, which will last until the end of the week, we ask all our compatriots to reduce their electricity consumption between 12 and 1800 hours to prevent blackouts in these conditions."
