Two new power units are planned to be built Russia’s Leningrad-II NPP, according to Alexander Drozdenko, the Governor of the Leningrad Region. He said on his official VKontakte page on 9 April that Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev had “announced the adoption of a fundamental decision on the construction of two more power units in Sosnovy Bor”. He noted that for the Leningrad region this decision will provide an opportunity to receive electricity for the development of industry, ensure the growth of construction and related industries, create modern qualified jobs, and receive additional taxes to the regional budget.

Earlier in April Likhachev had also said that two more units are to be built at the Novovoronezh-II NPP in the mid-2030s. Leningrad NPP currently had four units in operation – two VVER-1200 units at Leningrad-II (6&7) and two RBMK units (1&2) at the original station, which are to be replaced by two more VVER-1200s and all four RBMK units will be decommissioned. Novovoronezh NPP also has four units in operation – two VVER-1200 units (6&7), one VVER-1000 unit (5) and one VVER-440 unit (4). Units 1-3 have been closed and are awaiting decommissioning.
