India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said in a regulatory filing on 18 February that its construction arm had secured a significant order from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for its Heavy Civil Infrastructure business in India to construct the Main Plant Civil Works at units 5&6 of the Kudankulam NPP. The scope of work includes construction of the reactor building, reactor auxiliary building, turbine building, diesel generator building and other safety related structures in a duration of 64 months.

L&T did not provide the value of the contracts but said the orders fall under the "significant" category, which ranges between INR10 billion ($138m) and INR25bn according to the classification of contracts. L&T is currently executing similar works of Kudankulam 3&4 units at the same site.

Kudankulam is being constructed under a 1988 Russian-Indian agreement which was amended in 1998. The general contractor (in terms of detailed design, equipment supply and technical assistance) is Atomstroyexport, the general designer is Atomenergoproekt. Atomenergomash is a supplier of key equipment. Kudankulam is one of the largest nuclear power projects in India and is scheduled to have six Russian VVER-1000 reactors. Units 1 and 2 are in operation, units 3 and 4 are under construction and units 5 and 6 planned with preparatory works in progress.
