Concreting of the foundation plates of the reactor building and the turbine building for Akkuyu 2 under construction in Turkey have been completed, Russia’s Akkuyu Nuclear announced.

Placement of the concrete mix in the foundation slab is carefully controlled, Akkuyu Nuclear explained. “The quality of the concrete mix is ??assessed in the laboratory, then at the laboratory post at the NPP site, a sample of concrete is taken from the concrete truck, its temperature, cone draft, and density are checked.”

To ensure the maximum strength of the slab, 2451 tons of reinforcement were laid in the foundation of the reactor building. A metal frame is used to hold the reinforcement in the design position. More than 17,000 cubic metres of concrete were poured into the foundation of the reactor building. The area of ??the concrete slab is 6864 square metres, its height 2.6 metres, and depth more than 8 metres. The weight of the finished reactor building will be about 470,000 thousand tons. The foundation slab of the reactor building is also highly seismic resistant.

Simultaneously with the concreting of the foundation slab of the reactor building, work was carried out on the construction of the foundation of the turbine building. The foundation contains 3200 tons of reinforcement. Additional reinforcement to the slab is provided by 363 supporting frames. The area of ??the concrete slab is 5814 square metres.

In the turbine building will house systems and equipment related to power delivery including the turbine unit, a deaerator (a device for purifying water from gas impurities), feed pumps and auxiliary equipment.

The elements of the reactor's inner containment were dispatched on 22 September from St Petersburg port. The equipment will be delivered by sea to the cargo terminal of the Akkuyu NPP construction site. It was manufactured at the Titan-2 holding company.

The inner containment will be assembled into a single tier and mounted in the design position using a special stand at the construction site.

The $20bn Akkuyu nuclear power plant will comprise four units with Russian designed VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors. The project has been  financed by Russia and is the first nuclear project to be implemented using a build-own-operate model under Rosatom’s management based on an intergovernmental contract signed with Russia in 2010.
