Country to phase out nuclear by end of 2022 Germany is planning to shutter its last remaining nuclear plants at the end of 2022, a policy direction set upon a decade ago in the aftermath of the Fukushima-Daiichi accident of 2011. A slight majority of Germans see a future role for nuclear energy in the power mix of the country, which has chosen to phase out nuclear by the end of 2022, according to a new survey by international pollster YouGov.

The survey found that 22% of participants want to see nuclear play a “larger” role in power generation at par with that of renewables, while 31% said Germany should still use some nuclear power, but certainly less in comparison with renewables.

Twenty-eight percent of responders were strictly against nuclear power, while another 12% expressed no defined opinion.

The survey was part of a cross-border poll by YouGov which also included the UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy.

Results showed that Danes are by far most skeptical towards nuclear power, with 37% of responders wanting no role for nuclear in power generation, followed by Germans and Italians at similar levels.

Participants in France, Spain, Sweden, and the UK, have expressed stronger support for nuclear power with respectively 45%, 40%, 43%, and 31% seeing the need for nuclear to play a larger role in the generation mix, at the same level as renewables.

Combined with respondents who prefer a lesser role for nuclear, results showed overall that 75% of the French, 70% of the Spanish, 69% of the Swedish, and 66% of the British want to have nuclear among national electricity sources.

Between 10 and 22 November 2021, YouGov polled 2,076 people in Germany, 1,000 people in France, 1,059 people in Spain, 1,007 people in Sweden, and 1,712 people in the UK, and 1,007 people in Italy.
