US-based utility Dominion Energy has received permission from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to increase the generating capacity of the Millstone-3 nuclear power plant in Connecticut by 1.6%.

The NRC said that Dominion could safely increase the reactor’s output, primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow.

The power uprate for Millstone-3 will increase the unit’s generating capacity by approximately 20 MW, the NRC said. TVA intends to implement the uprate by the spring of 2022.

Millstone is Connecticut’s only operational nuclear power station with two units in commercial operation and one in permanent shutdown.

Millstone-2, an 869-MW pressurised water reactor unit, began commercial operation in 1975 and Millstone-3, a 1,210-MW PWR unit, in 1986.

In 2008, Millstone-3 received a 7% uprate to its capacity raising it from the original about 1,150 MW to about 1,230 MW.
