Tvel said the delivery was part of a contract signed in 2019 with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and will cover the fuel needs of the research reactor for the next several years.

The company said the supplied batch of VVR-M2 fuel assemblies was manufactured by its Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant subsidiary.

The Budapest research reactor is used for scientific and applied research in nuclear physics and material studies and in particular for developing nuclear power in Hungary.

The unit, a water-cooled, water-moderated Soviet designed plant that went critical in 1959, is used for studying the properties of reactor materials and nuclear fuel cycle.

Since it began operation it has undergone a couple of refurbishments and has used fuel produced by the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant. From 2012, the reactor core has been entirely loaded with low-enriched fuel assemblies only.
